Lots of technologically interesting things happening in the biotechnology field happening these days, and IIT Kharagpur does not want to be left behind. IIT Kharagpur is one-step closer to having a Biotechnology Park, reports the Business Standard:

IIT Kharagpur signed a memorandum of association (MOA) with the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation (WBIDC) for developing the much talked about biotechnology park in Kharagpur.

IIT officials have made it clear that the institute wanted to project the state as a technology hub and the biotech park was the first step in the direction. S Dey, professor and head of the department of biotechnology of IIT-Kgp, said after the signing of MoU with WBIDC, that the thrust of the biotech park would be on healthcare technology and product.

“Healthcare would be the focus for the park,” he said.

Describing the initiative as the beginning of the technology era in the state, he pointed out that IIT was keen on helping the state government in setting up technology parks in other fields.

Nirupam Sen, state commerce and industry minister and WBIDC chairman, said that the projected investment for the park, was around Rs 100 crore. The park would be spread over 100 acres.
