I had the pleasure of meeting Arvind Kejriwal (IIT Kharagpur graduate and recipient of the Magsaysay award) again recently. He is continuing his work on RTI and partnering with other organizations and NGOs to spread the word and increase overall awareness on the issue. He mentioned that Bihar is the first state in the country to setup a call center dedicated for RTI. Citizens can call in to file their application or seek updates/status. I was given to understand that there continues to be some hurdles, like backlogs of RTI related cases with the Chief Information Commission.
For those you who are aware of his work on the Right to Information (”RTI”)in India, and have been looking for an avenue to contribute towards RTI and fighting corruption in India in general, you now have an avenue to do so. The Association for India’s Development (AID) has now established an anti-corruption fund. Visit AID’s page on RTIfor details. Thanks to sustained efforts by AID volunteers, Indian Embassy in Washington DC has implemented RTI and it now comes under full purview of RTI act, 2005.
AID is also organizing a concert on 14, July in the bay area to raise funds for RTI efforts in India.
