IIT FoundationEnabling World Class Excellence at IIT Kharagpur
One Initiative, One Action, One Day at a Time

December2010

Message from Arjun Malhotra, Chairman, Vision 2020

Arjun Malhotra
Dear fellow KGP-ians,

I am writing to you as Chairman of Vision 2020 Fund raising program to inform you that your timely donations to IIT Kharagpur are key to a) making the Diamond Jubilee a resounding success, and b) making the IIT Kharagpur alumni movement the envy of all other Indian universities.

During the Golden Jubilee of the institute, a few alums did a major part of the “giving back” because, we were not organized to communicate with the majority of alums. Since then, the internet has become pervasive, social networks have exploded, and as a result it is far more convenient for us to connect with many more alums.

President Obama’s effective use of such channels has proven the power of grass root contributions, and we would like to make a similar campaign work for us. here is whht we can achieve. If every KGP-ian donates just 1% of their household income, and also gets companies to match their donations, I am sure we we can raise at least $20 million in the next 12 months.

So here is what I would suggest:

  • I would like each and every alum on this distribution list to make a contribution at a level at which they are comfortable today.
  • Spread the word about IIT Kharagpur’s Diamond Jubilee that takes place on August 18th 2011 at Kharagpur, to those alums who are not registered on our website, and ask them to register at: http://www.iitfoundation.org/register
Donation is painless and easy at: http://www.iitfoundation.org/donate

You can read about all the various Fund categories at: http://www.iitfoundation.org/donate/categories.php
However, please give special consideration to two new funds:

    • The “Diamond Jubilee Fund” to restore the old IIT structures including the Historic Old Building
    • The “Institution Development (ID) Program”.
  • Make your donation by December 31 2010 to maximize the tax benefit from your contribution to a 501(c) organization such as IIT Foundation.
  • If your company has a ‘Donor Matching Program’, provide them details about IIT Foundation ( U.S. Federal tax ID: 47-0747227) and ask them to match your contribution by mailing a check to:

    Attn : Treasurer
    IIT Foundation
    6301 Owensmouth Ave, Suite 750
    Woodland Hills CA 91367
    USA

With every KGP-ian donating to an institute that changed our lives forever, I am confident that the fund raising goals for the Diamond Jubilee can be exceeded.

I am counting on your active participation

Season’s Greetings from Prof. Patra, Dean AA & IR

Dear Alumnus

While I am writing this note to wish you all for the approaching new year, what is coming to my mind is the dynamic phase which we have gone through during the year 2010. This year has been quite eventful in terms of changes not just across the world but even in your beloved Institute. Among the most crucial ones, which is likely to positively impact the future generations of students, is the Institutional Development (ID) Program.

The ID Program is designed to be a transformative one to bring in necessary inputs to IIT Kharagpur to attain tangible benefits to the students and faculty of the Institute. For students, it should result in better placements, while for the faculty, it should help them achieve quality research publications and international recognitions. This in turn would bring in better quality of students, particularly for post-graduate education and research. The overall objective is to enhance the international ranking and the brand image of IIT Kharagpur.

Leveraging the alumni and corporate relations is the key to achieve this objective. Towards this end, the ID program is engaging with global alumni. We have launched this program in July this year and have already geared in programs like corporate matching and tax exemption for alumni. We are engaging with a number of alumni and their organizations on new R&D projects.

So, here we are not just with a mere fund raising campaign but to look forward to a holistic growth of our alma mater. We look forward to your heartiest contribution towards a wide range of activities:

  • Alum connectivity
  • Sustainable Fundraising
  • R&D Projects
  • Recruitment and Retaining
  • KGP brand building

I would like to mention here that this initiative was conceived keeping in mind all stake holders – alumni, faculty, students and the country at large. Hence without your active interest and facilitation it will be unimaginable to ride on the path of success. IIT Kharagpur has committed itself towards implementation of this program and making a globally reputed position for the Institute. We urge you to become the brand ambassadors and be a part of the transformation process of IIT Kharagpur, which in turn would lead our country to greater glory in the field of higher education and research. Let our IIT become the first “Institute for India’s Transformation”, that was the vision of our forefathers like Pandit Nehru, Sardar Patel and Maulana Azad.

Wishing you and your family Season’s Greetings and Happy new Year.

Prof. Amit Patra
Dean Alumni Affairs & International Relations

Message from Prof.Damodar Acharya, Director, IIT Kharagpur

Prof. Damodar Acharya, Director, IIT KharagpurDear KGP-ians ,

India is in the midst of unprecedented change, and as such the IITs, which were started primarily to educate students to run in India’s post independence factories, have to rethink their mission. I believe that IIT Kharagpur must develop human capital that can create the "e;intellectual property"e; required to develop and produce products and services that can be domestically affordable with international quality and reliability. To do that we must create more world class PhDs.

The Institute is working hard with the Government and Faculty to achieve this vision, and the Dean (AA & IR), Prof. Amit Patra, is mobilizing alums, and through them, their contacts in Industry and academia to complement the efforts.

I am pleased to inform you that the Board of Governors has approved the Institution Development (ID) Program to engage global alumni in forward looking key initiatives. ID will assist in recruiting and retention of good quality faculty , channelizing Corporate R&D to IIT Kharagpur, and in enhancing the IIT Kharagpur brand. This will be possible if there is a sustainable fund raising program. You shall be hearing specifics from Amit shortly. I request you to give us your full support in these very crucial start up years.

I also would like to remind you that on August 18, 2011 our alma mater will celebrate its Diamond Jubilee year. Last year I had made requests to support various Diamond Jubilee programs. I am pleased to inform you that alums have already delivered the first souvenir publication and alum Shri Shyamal Roy (1975 ECE NH1965 ME NH) has done an outstanding job executing the project. Another key initiative is to renovate the old IIT structures and buildings including the Historic Old Building, and retain it for future. The estimated cost is US $ 5.0 million and the institute needs your support.

I am counting on your generous contributions to the ID and the Diamond Jubilee Programs. So please donate generously : http://www.iitfoundation.org/donate

My best wishes to you and your family. I look forward to seeing you in 2011.

Professor Damodar Acharya
Director and Alum, IIT Kharagpur

Update: Please note that Shyamal Roy’s graduation year and hall had a mistake. We have now corrected it. We apologize for the mistake.
