IIT Kharagpur Establishes ‘RANBIR AND CHITRA GUPTA SCHOOL OF INFRASTRUCTURE DESIGN AND MANAGEMENT’ - With $1 Million Donation from Ranbir Singh Gupta

On 5th January, 2008, Dr. Damodar Acharya, Director of IIT Kharagpur, and Mr. Ranbir (Ron) Singh Gupta signed a Memorandum of Understanding to set up “RANBIR AND CHITRA GUPTA SCHOOL OF INFRASTRUCTURE DESIGN AND MANAGEMENT.”

The domain of infrastructure design and management has become critically important in recent times and its need is expected to increase manifold with rapid development. This field calls for interdisciplinary expertise from several core engineering, architecture and management branches. A new breed of people trained in this domain and associated research is crucial to sustain the development. IIT Kharagpur, with its strong background in each of the related disciplines, wishes to take an initiative to create this unique academic unit to pursue this area and achieve international level excellence. Mr Ranbir (Ron) Singh Gupta, a 1970 alumnus of the department of architecture of this institute shares that vision and has a keen interest in helping the institute to develop this area and wishes to contribute to its development. Therefore the Institute has decided to set up the ‘Ranbir and Chitra Gupta School of Infrastructure Design and Management’ (or ‘RCG InfraTech’) at IIT Kharagpur to achieve this vision.

This school will be an academic unit of IIT Kharagpur governed by the rules and regulations of the institute. Faculty, staffing and academic programmes shall be developed by the Institute. Initially postgraduate degree programmes in this area including M Tech, MBA and PhD are envisaged. A unique feature of this will be its practice orientation in collaboration with industry, government, R&D organizations and other agencies. Some foundation courses will also be developed for introducing this emerging area at undergraduate level. Executive development programmes in niche areas shall also be a highlight of this school. A major mandate is to carry out research, development and consultancy in the related area of infrastructure design and management. A matrix of key vertical and horizontal areas shall be addressed through research and development. For this, units of excellence and consortia shall be developed in collaboration with partners from industry, government, foundations, alumni and other agencies sharing the same vision. An Advisory Committee chaired by the Director shall provide guidance and direction to the school to achieve its required goals. This Committee shall permanently include Mr Ranbir (Ron) Singh Gupta and other eminent personalities from India and abroad as approved by the Director, IIT Kharagpur. Mr Ranbir (Ron) Singh Gupta has agreed to make an initial contribution of US$ 1 million to IIT Kharagpur through the Ron and Chitra Gupta Foundation as seed money to set up this school.
