IIT Kharagpur Alumni Accelerate Plans to Develop One of the World's Best Alumni Networks
Santa Clara, California, USA March 10, 2003:

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur alumni are launching another bold initiative on the heels of February launch of Vision 2020 a fundraising initiative to raise a $200 million endowment fund by the year 2020. IIT Kharagpur alumni want to develop and sustain one of the best alumni networks in the world.

"I and most of the alumni feel fortunate to have graduated from IIT Kharagpur. It is difficult to imagine a career without the IIT Kharagpur educational experience. When I think along those lines, I am convinced that the IIT Kharagpur alumni network, much like Harvard and Stanford, will soon become one of the many reasons for future students to select IIT Kharagpur as their destination of choice," said Mr. Vinod Gupta, Chairman and CEO of InfoUSA. Mr. Gupta is the founder and a member of Board of Directors of the IIT Foundation, the US based alumni organization for IIT Kharagpur. He is also one of the largest donors to IIT Kharagpur. "IIT Kharagpur alumni share a special affinity towards their alma mater. The vibrant campus life, the small town and IIT culture, and infrastructure fostered a strong inter-dependence with fellow students. In addition, there was tremendous passion for extra-curricular activities. All of this developed a fierce but healthy competitive spirit on one hand and an extraordinary team spirit and camaraderie on the other," remarked Mr. Gupta.

Mr. Raj Khanna, Vice President at Sun Microsystems, and President of the IIT Kharagpur alumni's San Francisco Bay Area Chapter is the Co-Chair of the Alumni Network campaign. "We have a strong alumni network in most of the major metros in the US and India. Our alumni are also present in large numbers in Europe, Australia and the Middle East. Thus we are able to provide our alumni around the world an instant support structure. In addition, we organize various social, cultural and professional events throughout the year. These events provide a home away from home for alumni and their families and assist in professional networking," noted Mr. Khanna.

"We are kicking off this campaign with a global alumni registration drive. We are encouraging all IIT Kharagpur alumni, around the world to register at our central web-site www.iitfoundation.org. In fact, to make it a fun event we are running an inter-batch, inter-hall and inter-department competition. The batch, hall and department with the highest percentage increase in alumni registered will get special recognition!" said Mr. Partha Sarathi Chatterjee, Director at Dynegy, President of IIT Kharagpur alumni's Houston Chapter and Executive-in-Charge of this campaign.

IIT Foundation, set up in 1994, was the first amongst US-based IIT alumni organizations. "We currently have over six thousand alumni registered on our web-site, and expect this number to easily go over fifteen thousand," noted Mr. Joyjit Nath, founder of the web-site and the Webmaster of IIT Foundation.
