IIT Kharagpur Alumni Articulate Their Perspective on Vision 2020 at the First Annual Meet of IIT Kharagpur Global Alumni NetworkKharagpur, West Bengal, India - January 4, 2004:
Speaking at the first annual Global Alumni Network meet of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur Mr. Arjun Malhotra articulated alumni perspective on Vision 2020.
Mr. Malhotra is one of IIT Kharagpur's outstanding alumni. He co-founded HCL, one of the largest IT companies in India and is currently Chairman of Headstrong, a global IT consulting company. Mr. Malhotra has also established himself as an exemplary alumnus. He is one of the largest donors to IIT Kharagpur and continues to provide his time and leadership to IIT Kharagpur and its Global Alumni Network. He serves on the Board of Directors of IIT Foundation, IIT Kharagpur's North American Alumni organization, and chairs its Vision 2020 initiative.
"We want IIT Kharagpur to be recognized as one of the leading institutes in academics, research and innovation in the world by the year 2020. We want IIT Kharagpur to become the preferred choice for students to pursue their undergraduate and post graduate studies; faculty to visit, teach and research; corporations to recruit, collaborate and set-up R&D offices in Kharagpur; and communities to seek developmental assistance, from around the world," said Mr. Malhotra, articulating the alumni perspective on Vision 2020.
"We are privileged to have received world-class education and to be associated with the world-class branding of the IIT system and IIT Kharagpur. However, other universities in India and the world are not sitting still. We cannot afford to rest on our laurels. We should expect increased competition for prospective students and faculty," said Mr. Malhotra. He added, "For the IITs to maintain and enhance their world-class reputation it will be imperative to continue attracting the best students through a merit-based system like Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), attract world-class faculty and administration and maintain and develop world-class academic and research infrastructure."
Mr. Malhotra also said, "We believe that government funding, corporate sponsorships and projects and alumni donations will all be required to achieve Vision 2020 objectives. In addition, a great institution requires an on-going pursuit to nurture a culture of excellence. Therefore, the faculty, administration, corporations, students and alumni have to demand more, and deliver more."
IIT Foundation, for its part, launched Vision 2020 in early 2003 with an objective to raise a $200 million endowment fund by the year 2020 to enable IIT Kharagpur maintain and enhance global leadership and excellence in technology education, research and innovation. Mr. Malhotra said, "the Global Alumni Network has to become an enabling resource for IIT Kharagpur and its alumni. Alumni must also contribute their time, leadership, relationships and their expertise to the benefit of IIT Kharagpur. In a majority of instances, these contributions can be as useful as the financial contributions."
In his concluding comments he challenged those present in person and in spirit to demand more from each other and themselves and deliver more to achieve Vision 2020 objectives.
