About Dr. Partha Pratim Chakrabarti:

Dr. Chakrabarti completed his B Tech and PhD from IIT Kharagpur in 1985 and 1988 respectively. He has been working as a faculty of the CSE Department of IIT Kharagpur from 1988 and is now a Professor. His areas of interest include Artificial Intelligence, CAD for VLSI and Algorithms. For the last 10 years he has steadfastly tried to bring about excellence in research in IIT Kharagpur. This includes both basic research and industrial applications. His work in Heuristic Search in AI solved some long-standing open problems. He worked on projects with the Volkswagen Foundation to develop technologies for combining the paradigms of heuristic search and deduction to concrete applications. His work in the area of CAD VLSI has been used by companies like National, Synopsys, Sun, Interra and Virtio. He has also developed technology for local industries like the Calcutta Stock Exchange, Department of Posts and the State Bank of India. His current research is on the foundations of "reasoning about circuits using logic algorithms and abstractions" to develop the next generation technologies for CAD using AI techniques.

His work has been well recognized and he has won several awards including the President of India Gold Medal, INSA Young Scientist, INAE Young Engineer, Swarnajayanti Fellowship and the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize.

His current passion is to set up a quality graduate level research environment in IIT Kharagpur to levels comparable to the best in the world. The objective is to be able to attract the best talent (e.g. quality of IIT B.Techs) to do graduate work at Kharagpur. This has led to the setting up of the Advanced VLSI Laboratory funded by the Alumni and a research group which works on basic as well as applied research. Special attention is given to high-end projects with leading industries. Presently 4 more faculty members and 20 graduates (including 15 IIT graduates) work in his group including some doing PhD and M.Tech.
