General Questions

Q: Why does IIT Kharagpur need money?
To enhance and sustain its status as the leading technical educational institute in the world IIT Kharagpur must have world class infrastructure (labs, equipment, etc.), attract and retain world class faculty, and attract the best students at all levels.

All three elements require financial resources.

  • World Class Infrastructure: IIT Kharagpur has excellent buildings, labs and non-academic infrastructure like the housing, student Gymkhana and sports stadiums. However, the equipment and labs are old, some equipment is not even available. To conduct research and teach students on leading edge subjects IIT Kharagpur must continually maintain and upgrade the infrastructure.

  • World Class Faculty: The faculty at IIT Kharagpur gets paid on UGC pay scale. That is typically lower than most corporate salaries in the industry, even in India. IIT Kharagpur cannot attract the next round of world class faculty on UGC pay scales. To attract world class faculty, IIT Kharagpur must also provide world class research facilities, world class non-academic infrastructure for faculty and their families, an attractive pool of research students and an environment to innovate and excel.

  • World Class Students: IIT Kharagpur is fortunate to attract from an outstanding pool of B.Techs from the JEE qualifiers, and M.Techs and Ph.D. from GATE. However, as we all know most B.Tech students end up joining IIMs, working for companies in India or leaving for pursuing for MS overseas. Very few IIT B.Techs join IIT Kharagpur to pursue their masters or doctrate interest. As mentioned earlier world class faculty requires world class research scholars. And world class research scholars require world class research infrastructure, faculty and attractive financial incentives.
Thus to enhance and sustain its status as the leading technical educational institute in the world IIT Kharagpur must have adequate resources to build and maintain world class infrastructure world class quality faculty and world class research scholars.
