Hostel Layout

Scholars Avenue (Thanks: Soumyo Mukherji)

The Hostels are laid out along Scholars Avenue which runs from the Institute gates all the way upto the hospital. There are seven hostels in all for Undergraduate male students and two for women. In addition, there are a few Post Graduate Students' hostels. Unofficially, there is the division between the old and new campus. The old campus consists of the earliest halls built when IIT was first started. They include:

* Azad Hall
* Patel Hall
* Nehru Hall

Together they constitute the PAN loop (Patel, Azad, Nehru laid out on the edge of a circle). These are farthest away from the Academic campus and hence grew in reputation to be the more fun places, in general, to be in.

The New campus consists of the following undergraduate hostels:

* Radhakrishnan Hall (R.K.)
* Rajendra Prasad Hall (R.P.)
* Vidyasagar Hall (V.S.)
* Sarojini Naidu Hall (S.N.)
* Indira Gandhi Hall (I.G.)

The graduate students live in the following hostels:

* B. C. Roy Hall
* Gokhale Hall
* J. C. Bose Hall
* Zakir Hussain Hall

Meticulous care seemed to have been taken in the placement of these halls. If one observes the hostel layout carefully, one would notice that the girls' hostels are closest to the institute and the police station (I still dont know why :-)) and also the fact that the womens' and mens' hostels are on opposite sides of Scholars avenue.

Cycling was the predominant mode of commuting to campus although some people preferred walking and a chosen few sported motorbikes.

Other things that one comes across on Scholars Avenue are the Gymkhana, Tennis Courts, Swimming Pool, HMC Office, Telephone and Fax center and Gopal's. The road is lined by trees which usually are lush green all year round. IIT Kharagpur has the advantage of being located in the middle of nowhere and hence is untouched by the cancerous growth of cities and the plague of construction. It is probably pretty much like what it was when it was originally built. The pollution free air puts it in stark contrast with other universities located in big cities.
