Technology Students Gymkhana

The Technology Students' Gymkhana is the center of all inter-hostel and
inter-college activities that the students of IIT Kgp engage in. A functional
division could be made by dividing the activities into two categories:
Social & Cultural and Sports. The highest
elected student member of the body
is the Vice President followed by the General Secretaries for the two
sub-divisions. A number of secretaries head the various smaller departments.
Social and Cultural ActivitiesOn the inter-college level, the grandest manifestation of this body is Spring Fest - the annual inter-college social and cultural festival. It is held on the weekend nearest to the 26th of January and consists of three days of competition and unadulterated fun. The participants come from various colleges and Universities - far and near - with a desire to compete and to have some fun on the way.The other activities are at the open competition level or at the inter-hall level. The Open IIT competitions are held in the fall semester and the Inter-Hall events are held in the spring semester (in general). Finally, another important annual competition is the Illumination Contest. Held on Diwali, the festival of lights, this is the night when all the hostels are lit up with oil lamps in intricate shapes and the best exhibit wins this contest(obviously). The hostel with the overall high points in the inter-hall social and cultural events wins the General Championship cup for Social and Cultural Activities.
Sports ActivitiesProbably the most important inter-college sports event for IIT Kharagpur is the Inter-IIT championship. Held annually during the winter break, this is the time when the sports contingents from all five IIT's congregate at one place for five days. The only events missing at this time are the aquatics events which are usually held in fall.The inter-hall sports championships are spread out over the year and the hall with overall high points gets the General Championship cup for sports.
