Gymkhana Elections

The gymkhana is run by an elected student committee. The student head is the vice president followed by the general secretaries for Social & Cultural activities and Sports. Then there are a bunch of secretaries whose functioning is overlooked by the G'Secs.

The elections for the gymkhana committee are held around the last week of May i.e. one month before the end of the academic year. The nominations are filed over a week and then displayed on notice boards. The students are allowed around three days to withdraw their nominations after which the campaigning period starts.

The use of posters and banners is allowed in the gymkhana elections although the type of posters and banners are specific and the time in which they are to be put up and removed are stipulated. However, at this time, the friends of the candidates get together and synergize all their creative ideas to make colorful posters with catchy slogans.

The candidates go from hall to hall campaigning and they have to present everyone with a calli chautha (a short manuscript describing their ideas and intentions). Similar to hall elections, the candidates have to face up to all sorts of people out to have fun at the expense of others. However, it is a great learning experience for those who go through it.

"Soap Boxes" are held in all the halls for the major posts. In this, the contenders for each important post are called together and then quizzed/grilled by a panel of seasoned senior students and the general hall populace. The majority of the hall population makes up their minds on this night as to who they will be voting for in the elections.

The gymkhana elections are held on an evening in late march.
