JANMASTAMI
|
Janmastami is celebrated every year to mark the birthday of Lord Krishna.
Although the festivities are not as big compared to Holi or Diwali,
we (many merely as spectators) do get involved in the breaking of the hundi.
Traditional significance aside, our main incentive was to get a share of the booty
stashed away in the pot. The pot was hung between B and C blocks, starting
out at a height of around 20 feet. A human pyramid is formed to get to
the pot and bring it down. People standing around try to make
it more difficult by pouring water on the pyramid. Invariably, we had
to lower the pot so as not to spend the whole day getting to our booty - which
was made up mainly of candy (remember Cadbury's Eclairs ?).

|
Making an initial attempt at the pot. Usually the taller
guys in the hall are on top of the pyramid and take a crack
at the pot.
|
|
After many unsucessful attempts, we lower the pot
and save ourselves a lot of trouble.
|
|
The pot is broken, the booty shared and there was
much rejoicing all around...
