The Institute Layout
|
The institute building and the departments are laid out on the academic
campus. On entering the IIT campus, the main gate is one of the first
things that one sees. Beyond the gate is a circle and the institute
building stands just behind it.
The New Central Library (Thanks: Kundan Sen) The other departments are laid out behind the institute building along two parallel roads that run on either side. A look at the academic campus map gives one a good idea of the layout. The departments have been marked by their code numbers on the map. Besides the various departments, other buildings of interest include the Central Research Facility (CRF), the old institute building, Workshops, Library Annex and Tagore Auditorium. The CRF houses some of the state of the art technology available at IIT Kharagpur including a Scanning Electron Microscope and the Optical Fibres Manufacturing equipment. The Tagore auditorium is the main open air theatre used for big events and performances during Spring Fest and the Inter-Hostel competitions.
The Old Institute Building is now a technology museum. Originally, it was the Hijli Detention Camp where prisoners were kept during the days of the Raj. It was the main institute building until the new building was completed a few years later. Now, it stands as a museum and is filled with ingenious mechanisms and tools developed as demonstration pieces over the years.
The old institute building has been captured in all its glory in the two pictures below:
I have enjoyed reading about IIT at Kharagpur, and was particularly interested in seeing the picture of the old Main Building. I was in the United States Air Force stationed at Kharagpur in 1945. The headquarters of the 20th Bomber Command of the 20th Air Force was located in that building and I worked in an office there. I have a picture of the building taken about the middle of April, 1945. President Franklin D. Roosevelt died on April 12 and the American flag on a flagpole in front of the building was flown at half mast. My picture shows that flag at half mast and a B-29 bomber from the Kharagpur air base is flying in the background. For a short time I was stationed at an air field at Dudkhundi where another part of the 20th Bomber Command was located. I enjoyed my stay in your fascinating land. - Marvin Williams, Feb 4 1997 IIT Kharagpur now has a new management school and a building is being constructed between the Mechanical and Chemical Engineering Departments to house the offices and classrooms. Presently, the intake per batch is of the order of ten students a year. Some new photos, sent by Ramesh D Kandadai:
