What happened to KGPNET?
Short Answer:As part of our goal to create a "world class network" of IIT Kharagpur alumni, we decided to merge the KGPNET and the IIT Foundation web-sites into one. The same people were maintaining both the sites anyway.

Long Answer:
The KGPNET web-site was started in 1995 by
Joyjit Nath and
Pran Kurup.
The KGPNET alumni database first came into existence in 1988 as a mailing list, started by N Asokan and John Lynn.
The IIT Foundation was founded in 1992 by Vinod Gupta. In addition to leading fund-raising efforts for the institute, the IIT Foundation developed its own alumni directory from the very begining. The IITF in fact has been sending out its "roster" to every single USA based alumnus in its database.
Since it did not make any sense to maintain two separate databases, the IIT Foundation began to use the KGPNET alumni database to send out its Newsletters and its "roster".
One of the primary goals of the IIT Foundation is to create a "world-class network" of IIT Kharagpur alumni. In order to realize this goal, it was critical to improve the services we offer our alumni. We also felt that as part of streamlining our services, it made sense to merge the KGPNET and the IIT Foundation web-sites together.
